Upcoming events of interest

30 Oct

As mentioned at this evening’s meeting, there are a few upcoming events at Berkeley and in San Francisco that Frankfurt Schoolkids like ourselves might find interesting:

  • Tomorrow, Thursday, Oct 30th: a conversation about history and narrative, drawing together Eelco Runia (this year’s Avenali Chair), Hayden White, Martin Jay, Carol Gluck, Harry Harootunian, and Ethan Kleinberg. The event is at 4pm in the Maude Fife Room, 315 Wheeler.
  • next Tuesday, November 4th: a conversation about the new critical biography of Walter Benjamin, featuring the biography’s authors, Howard Eiland and Michael Jennings, as well as Lindsay Waters and Martin Jay. This is taking place at 5pm in 370 Dwinelle Hall.
  • next week is also the week that City Lights Books is sponsoring a series of events in San Francisco celebrating Eiland and Jennings’ new book on Benjamin. Events include roundtable discussions and lectures, a film screening, and presentations from scholars, activists, and historians, on central aspects of Benjamin’s life and philosophy, as well as his work’s relevance to contemporary politics, objects, and issues, like gentrification, the Occupy movement, Google glass, drone warfare, nanotechnology, and artificial intelligence.

Happy rambles,

Megan & Erin
